چکیده

The linear impulse response of axisymmetric jets is examined for a family of variable-temperature profiles typical of the potential core. The influence of jet heating, shear layer thickness, Reynolds and Mach number on the spatio-temporal stability of both axisymmetric and helical modes is investigated. The linear impulse response is retrieved from a numerical solution of the spatial eigenvalue problem, which is derived from the fully compressible equations of motion. Changes in the spatio-temporal stability of heated versus isothermal jets are shown to arise solely from the effect of the baroclinic torque. By considering the full linear impulse response, the competition between jet column modes and shear layer modes is characterized. Jet column modes are only found to occur for axisymmetric disturbances. In thin shear layer jets, the jet column mode is shown to prevail at low group velocities, whereas axisymmetric and helical shear layer modes dominate at high group velocities. The absolute mode of zero group velocity is found to always be of the jet column type. Although only convectively unstable, the maximum growth rates of the shear layer modes greatly exceed those of the jet column modes in thin shear layer jets. In thick shear layer jets, axisymmetric modes of mixed jet column / shear layer type arise. The weakened maximum growth rate of mixed modes accounts for the dominance of helical modes in temporal stability studies of thick shear layer jets. pa st el -0 00 02 95 8, v er si on 1 23 J ul 2 01 0 24 Linear impulse response in hot round jets

A new mechanism for the generation of quasi-zonal jets in the ocean

[1] A simple barotropic quasi-geostrophic model is used to demonstrate that instabilities radiated from an unstable eastern boundary current can generate zonal striations in the ocean interior with realistic wavelengths and amplitudes. Nonlinear transfer of energy from the more unstable trapped modes is important for radiating modes to overcome friction. The dynamics shown here are generic enou...

Mach cone shock waves at RHIC

Energy and momentum lost by hard jets propagating through hot and dense nuclear matter have to be redistributed in the medium. It has been conjectured that collective sound modes are excited. Those lead to Mach cone nuclear shock waves in the nuclear medium that are shown to account for three and four particle angular correlation structures of hadrons with a (semi-)hard trigger hadron in heavy-...

Recent Advances in Aeroacoustics

Acoustics is one of the oldest examples of applied research, long before the term was even coined: witness the concept of musical scales by the ancient Greeks and the construction of musical and other sound instruments in most civilizations through the ages. Compared with sound in the strict sense of small pressure perturbations in a homogeneous, non-dissipative medium at rest, modern aeroacous...

Jet noise from instability mode interactions

A nonlinear interaction model is used to study sources of sound in jets. The model uses quadratic interactions of instability modes, which are obtained by solving the linear parabolized stability equations. Source terms involving nonlinear interactions are evaluated and a linear wave equation is solved with direct injection of the source terms. Thus the complete method solves only linear partia...
